Ongoing Projects

Artifacts Consulting: Tacoma, WA


Cultural Reconnaissance provides on-going, as-needed, research, and technical writing expertise. Projects completed include Tacoma’s McMenamin’s Restaurant, the Hunt-Mottet Warehouse, and the White Shield Home for unwed mothers. Before closing down their consultancy, Artifacts asked Cultural Reconnaissance to assist them with their final project—The Tacoma Brewery Blocks classification project. Cultural Reconnaissance conducted a pedestrian survey of the Brewery Blocks for a report for City Council review on the naming request in 2021. In 2023, the project team will provide special valuation tax credit assistance for several downtown projects.  

City of Lewiston: Lewiston, ID


Cultural Reconnaissance works with both the Historic Preservation Commission and the City Public Works Department in crafting language for a city-wide Historic Preservation Plan.  The draft Preservation Plan will undergo public comment prior to being submitted to City Council for adoption.

Hawaiian Railway Society: Eva Beach, HI


Cultural Reconnaissance assists the Hawaiian Railway Society on matters pertaining to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 as it relates to effects to the National Register Listed Oahu Railway and Land Company District. Cultural Reconnaissance working with Fung and Associates, conducted the survey and helped craft the cultural integrity study of the Historic District. 



In 2020, HRS asked Cultural Reconnaissance to participate in Zoom Conferences with the Federal Highways Administration regarding the programmatic agreement for the Oahu Railway and Navigation Company right of way. In 2021, Cultural Reconnaissance made periodic checks to see how the institution was faring through the COVID crisis. However, their ability to make changes and progress towards achieving their cultural resource needs was severely limited.

ECOS USA: Spokane, WA


Conducted a WISSARD records review for a cultural resource assessment for the Chumov Conditional Use Permit.

North Pend Oreille Chamber of Commerce: Metaline Falls, WA


Cultural Reconnaissance assisted the North Pend Oreille Chamber of Commerce in crafting a feasibility study and business plan for a heritage tourism destination development in Eastern Washington. Cultural Reconnaissance conducted research, contacted potential revenue sources, sourced historic equipment and artifacts that may be available for purchase or lease.

Provided technical expertise to the design and content of a future issuance of a postal stamp series featuring iconic Railway Stations across America.

Spees Design Build: Seattle, WA


Cultural Reconnaissance provided technical assistance and writing as a subcontractor to Spees Design Build for their project books. The project books focused upon specific concerns regarding a proposed seismic retrofit of various contributing structures within the American Lake Veteran’s Administration Hospital Campus. Cultural Reconnaissance conducted field inspections, consulted with architects, engineers, and facilities and maintenance personnel regarding best practices for seismic retrofits of historic structures.
